Estes Park Institute kicked off its re-imagined conference program yesterday in Half Moon Bay with a dynamic general session on National Policies & Local Priorities. The program continued today as participants chose one of four focused Program Paths to follow.  These new Program Paths were received with great enthusiasm and participants enjoyed the interactive nature of the presentations.

“Very useful examples of ways to innovate. Wonderful to see new methods of implementation that are working.”

“Excellent selection of topics. Provided sufficient detail to stimulate follow-up plans back “at the ranch.”

Attendees chose one of the following Program Paths:

GOVERNANCE IN A TIME OF TRANSFORMATION

With Path Leader John Tiscornia, Guest Presenter Dr. Andrew Ziskind, and other Estes Park faculty, participants explored the challenges and solutions of physicians and hospitals working together to provide leadership and governance beyond the four walls of the hospital. Some of the specific topics:

New skills and strategies that Boards will need

How to effectively manage population health through integrated networks

The metrics that Boards need to support quality, lower cost and improve health

A high-level review of considerations on whether to merge, affiliate or stay independent

The risk areas of new compliance challenges

And finally, the Board’s role in developing a change management culture

CULTURE, LEADERSHIP AND PERFORMANCE: THE PATHWAY TO PERFECT CARE

This session brought attendees up to date and on the progressive edge of where we are with quality and safety today:

Case stories—among them, the GM ignition recall and Virginia Mason Medical Center’s own journey—to bring this work to life

Practical tools on culture and leadership to use back home

Dr. Gary Kaplan and Dr. Della Lin served as path guides, accompanied by Steve Tringale, Stuart Altman and Guest Presenter, John Nance.

IDEAWORKS: BRINGING INNOVATIONS TO LIFE

Here Estes Park attendees met people doing now what won’t be reality elsewhere for years:

Dr. Tom Hale described the first virtual care center in the United States—housing 75 telemedicine programs and 300 physicians, nurses, and support staff.

Dr. Jeff Thompson shared innovations in advance care planning and how a community came to have 96% of people with advance care plans that are followed 99% of the time.

CEO and physician Mark Laney described Mosaic Life Care, a revolutionary new care model going beyond physical health.

Guiding the conversations were futurist Leanne Kaiser Carlson and innovator Dr. Barry Bittman.

PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP: THE MEDICAL STAFF AND BEYOND

Have you noticed what has mostly disappeared? The traditional model of a single hospital with a medical staff composed primarily of independently practicing physicians. More and more hospitals have aligned in one way or another with other hospitals and systems and have begun to employ large numbers of physicians. And, in some markets physician groups, in a variety of forms, have become the dominant driver of care.

With Path Leader Linda Haddad and other Estes Park faculty, participants explored how hospitals and physicians can transition from the traditional model, not only to an integrated system… but one that can truly move toward providing value-based care and population health management.
