The Physician Leadership Path was jam-packed… embracing the full range of physician roles and their rapid evolution.   Those who shared experiences ranged in their focus from a successful medical staff moving towards an” integrated” unit—but  not sure what that meant—to fully integrated physician organizations capable of contracting with third party payors, employers and others to provide care.  Some issues spanned the continuum—such as various conflict of interest scenarios and the antitrust implications of relationships that focus more on market power than quality of care.  The discussion highlighted how relationships change when some physicians are employed, others independent, still others contractors.   Lessons about compensation models, responsibilities of physician governance and moving into the world of financial risk-taking brought into sharp focus  how fast the life of the physician leaders is growing and changing.  Steve, Charlotte, Dan, Rob and I welcome your comments and ideas about your travels on this path.  Shared experiences light each other’s way.
